Eating in Restaurants:
- I avoid red meat instead I choose fish, or seafood.
- I ask for vegetables, steamed or lightly sautéed in olive oil. Most restaurants have broccoli, spinach, carrots.
- Green salads with as many raw veggies as possible. For dressing, I use olive oil & vinegar, I avoid the creamy stuff.
- I avoid fried foods and stick to foods that are steamed.
- If I need to lose a couple of pounds. I try to only eat half the meal and take home the other half for lunch or dinner the next day.
- Soups: like minestrone and vegetable are a great choice as long as they're not too salty.
- Side order of beans.
- Vegetable plate.
- I also try to avoid bread and butter, I just ask the servers to remove it from the table otherwise it's too tempting.
- Beverages: green tea, spring water or sprinkling water.
Ordering takeout:
- Chinese- steamed vegetables, brown rice, shrimp, whole fish. I make sure there is no MSG.
- Mediterranean – hummus, babaganoush (eggplant spread).
- Italian- minestrone soup, arugula salad, broccoli rabe, fish of the day, steamed or broiled, sometimes I'll eat pasta with veggies, however I avoid the cream sauces.
- Mexican – burritos with whole wheat tortilla if they have them. Black beans, vegetables, guacamole, salsa.
- Japanese – miso soup (I can't eat this if I'm watching my salt intake, it's very salty) edaname, seaweed salad, green salad, vegetables, rice, vegetable sushi, steamed fish.
- Indian – soups, all vegetable dishes, steamed rice, I also have to request that the food isn't too spicy or hot, otherwise I'll have problems with my ulcers.
- Thai – soups, spring rolls (steamed not fried), salads, pad thai with vegetables no egg, steamed or broiled fish.
